Description

This course will be a basic introduction to Lie groups, and should complement the courses in Lie algebras, quantum groups and reflection groups that have been given recently. The only prerequisites are some basic algebra and some basic topology. We will do:

  • Basics of differentiable manifolds
  • Tangent spaces and the exponential map
  • Invariant integration and the Haar measure
  • Basic representation theory
  • Peter-Weyl theorem
  • Tannak-Krein duality
  • and then head towards the Weyl character formula
